The new phone has undergone a radical makeover compared to the original device. The large screen unfolds from the inside and not from the outside.
Huawei announced the Mate X2, its first foldable device after the 2019 Mate X. The new phone has undergone a radical overhaul compared to the original device. The large screen unfolds from the inside and not from the outside. The Huawei Mate X2 has a second screen on the outside, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold series. The phone’s pictures were revealed minutes before Evan Blass on Voice’s official announcement.
Huawei Mate X2 will be released with no support for Google applications or services, which is likely to severely limit its success outside of China. According to the Huawei website, the phone will run EMUI 11.0 powered by Android 10. However, during the live presentation, the company plans to have the Mate X2 among the first phones to be upgraded to its own system in April.
The Mate X2’s internal screen measures 8 inches with a resolution of 2480 x 2200, the external screen is 6.45 inches and has a resolution of 2700 x 1160. Both are OLEDs and have refresh rates of up to 90 Hz. They are too slightly larger than the internal 7.6-inch screen and external 6.2-inch screens of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. Internally, the phone is powered by Kirin 9000’s FlagShip chipset, the processor that featured on the Mate 40 last year Pro was presented. The Mate X2 has 8 GB of RAM and a battery with a nominal capacity of 4,400 mAh that can be quickly charged up to 55 W.

There are four cameras on the back of the phone. A 50-megapixel wide-angle, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle, a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and an 8-megapixel SuperZoom camera with 10x optical zoom. The selfie camera on the outside of the phone has a resolution of 16 megapixels and there doesn’t appear to be a selfie camera inside or on the edge of the collapsible internal screen.
The Mate X2 is technically the third phone in Huawei’s foldable line. Last year the company released Mate XS, an updated version of the original Mate X with a more durable display and a faster Kirin 990 processor.
According to Huawei, the Mate X2 will be available in China with 256 GB of internal storage for 17,999 yen (approx. $ 2,785 USD) or 18,999 yen (approx. 2,940 USD) with 512 GB of storage. Available colors include blue, pink, black, and white. This equipment will be available in China from Feb.25, but it is unclear when it will be introduced outside the country.
